My new AV System

3

So the other week, my old Sony 5.1 amp and speaker system decided to die. It’d had a good life and for an el cheapo system it had done a very good job.

But the time had come to replace it and buy a new system. As I already have a reasonable Blu-Ray player I only need and amp and speaker package. Now, I’m really no expert when it comes to AV stuff, so I had to hit the interweb hard to come up with the best possible solution. After about 15 minutes of searching I decided to go and ask the local experts. Their recommendation is pretty much what you see below.

AV Receiver

I decided on the Pioneer VSX-921. Now this is a bit of overkill for what I need,  it will do everything I want and about a million things besides. But what I do like is that it has Apple Airplay which means I can play my music via my iPad without connecting it to the amp, and with all the hundreds of connections on the back, it’ll mean that it should adapt to my future needs.

Speakers

Speakers were a bit more simple, all you get in the box is 5 speakers and a sub-woofer. I opted for the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 5.1.

What’s it like?

After first switching it on, although the Blu-Ray sounded decent, the other inputs were a bit meh. Then I decided to read the instructions and follow the detailed setup and calibration procedures.

Well that made a huge difference. Everything was so much better. The sound is so clear, the surround effect is so perfect, and the bass is floor shaking.

I don’t listen to many systems, but this one to me is pretty amazing.

DonkeyBiscuits rating = Awesome to the MAX!!!

Oh, before I forget, I would like to say thanks to Peter Tyson, where I ordered everything. There website is most excellent and their next day delivery service is first rate.

Poker night

0

So last night was poker night at the local casino – Maxims in Reading. Texas Hold’Em tournament, £40 buy-in, starting stack 12,000 (with add-ons) with blinds of 50/100.

My usual tactic, which has served me so well in the past, of folding until the first break was going quite well. Indeed I actually won a pretty decent hand, my only winning hand of the session, which also happened to be the last hand of the session. This got me up to about 20,000 chips.

Then the disaster. 10 minutes after the break I got dealt my first pocket pair, 99. A couple of people made small raises and the guy to my right made a 2,500 raise. I decide to represent strength and stick in a 5,000 raise, which was called. Flop comes 9 10 3. W00t, trips. Guy to my right makes a 5,000 raise and then I go all in for about 15,000 which the other guy calls.

Cards get turned face up, I have three 9′s; the other guy has three 10′s. Turn and river are no help so I exit in about 30th place.

Oh well, it’s all good fun. Next time I fold until the final table.

We’re back baby!!!

DonkeyBiscuits.com is back baby and now 1000% more awesome!!!

After 5 years and over 1700 posts, Donkey Biscuits.com: Xbox News and Stuff is no more. I just didn’t have the time or enthusiasm to keep up a news blog any more. It was great fun while it lasted, but the effort to find and post new stories every day is just too great.

So what’s the deal with the new blog?

Basically this website is my personal blog and brings you all the crap which is too big for my Twitter page and my inane geeky ramblings. Video games, YouTube videos and just general rubbish copied and pasted from all over the interweb.

So, welcome to Donkey Biscuits.com: Just another useless weblog.
