Microsoft Research’s Kodu Game Lab launched on Xbox LIVE Community Games today, giving aspiring game makers of all ages the chance to bring their own game creations to Xbox 360. For just 400 Microsoft Points anyone with a passion for game creation can harness the magic of programming and game development at every level.

Built using Microsoft’s XNA Games Studio, Kodu Game Lab is a pick-up-and-create toolset where any aspiring game creators can build their own unique world using a simple image-based creator menu that makes game-making easier than ever. With almost 200 different programming features to choose from, and the ability to share games with anyone on your Friends List, the opportunities are endless.

With its image-based user menu Kodu Game Lab enables game creation using only an Xbox 360 controller, right from the comfort of your couch. Kodu Game Lab comes with several tutorials and sample games to get aspiring game makers started. It also offers co-op gameplay for up to four players and 20 different characters with a range of abilities.

Starting late July 2009, Xbox LIVE Community Games will be known as Xbox LIVE Indie Games.

The launch of XNA Game Studio 3.1 begins the process of renaming Xbox LIVE Community Games to Xbox LIVE Indie Games. We’re starting the communication about this transition with you – our incredible Creators. With your help hopefully this name change (along with other new features such as User Ratings!) will increase understanding and discoverability of your games! Late July, when we update Creators Club Online, we will begin revealing the name change to the Consumer side of our business. We believe this name better represents the independent spirit of XNA Game Studio gaming and creations!

Community game Corsair is now available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The game is available in the Canada, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, United States Xbox Live regions and costs 400 points.

Defend the nine worlds of the Camariam Consortium or play as the besieging Valaxus Empire with their planet obliterating Decimators. Play across five different game play types, from local two player co-op campaigns, to multiple versus modes supporting 2-4 local players. Experience a new variation of the shooter genre.

A classic match 3 block game in which up to 4 players compete to remove blocks from their playing field before it’s filled. Drop blocks on your opponents by matching 4 or more blocks or forming chains of matches.

FreaKick is a soccer free kick game that allows 2 players to either be goalkeeper or kicker and try to score or block the goal. The player can also practice against the defenders. Curving with the thumb stick allows for special free kicks and the instant replay feature allows the player to see the amazing goal. The camera can be controlled to fit specific viewing needs.
